Hello Redeemer Family! I hope this finds you well. In a time when our "normals" seem to be shaken, we wanted to make sure that we continue to encourage our families with young and school-aged children. This unprecedented season of unknowns, new roles, and LOTS of time at home has potential to be a really sweet time to help our children grow in their understanding of God and the gospel. We have found more time to spend discussing scriptures and truth with our children. With this goal in mind, we'd like to put out a weekly guide to help us all shepherd our children in the Truth. That being said, we know that life is also very chaotic and crazy (with many of our parents taking on the role of teacher and caregiver while simultaneously trying to continue to do their own jobs). This guide is in no way prescriptive of what needs to happen in your home. We just wanted to lay out some resources for you to draw upon when ready. Consider this a "Choose Your Own Adventure" in terms of shepherding your own children! In a season where God's sovereignty may be called in to question, it feels fitting to point our children to the security and consistency of His gospel story. What is God's purpose? Why were we created? Is he in control (even of the coronavirus)? With that in mind, we hope to paint with large brush strokes and start at the beginning by discussing creation. While we will be starting at the beginning, my hope is that these resources could be used for any interaction with scripture. Is your family currently working through a book of the Bible in family worship/discipleship? Fantastic! Use these tips and resources for that. I. Scripture Reading The story of creation and redemption starts in Genesis. Let's begin there.
II. Interacting with the Bible. Once we've read the story, how do we discuss and build upon the passage? Here are a couple of thoughts:
IV. New City Catechism Let's review questions 1-4 this week in our NCC catechism! They help us remember God's character and purposes. We are hoping to also deliver some new NCC booklets to you. You can also download the New City Catechism application on your phone or tablet or access its features via their website (questions, devotionals, songs, etc)! V. Prayer Guide Along with scripture reading and study, lets encourage our children in prayer this week. Here are some thoughts on how to guide their little hearts as they pray.
VI. Additional Parenting Resources When do I read the Bible with my child? When do I pray with them? As we enter into new rhythms during this time, we are praying for opportunities and windows to discuss truth with your child. As a family we have added on a little "Bible time" to our new home school lessons. Maybe its five minutes at dinner time or before bed. Here's an article from the Gospel Coalition website with helpful ways to talk to your Children about God and the Corona virus. Hope these resources are helpful for you! God is Good! Amanda Johnson "I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!" Psalm 34:1-3 |
